African + American = Proper Slur

Some honest talk about RACE. Growing up as a dark skin sista I was no stranger to being called names because of my complexion. I was called many names such as Blacky, Spook, Monkey, Kunta Kinte, Tar Baby and many more. But I was also called "African" as if it were some kinda slur. Out of all the names that proved problematic being called an AFRICAN in a negative way played a large role in why I embrace the label "AFRICAN American". I call the label AFRICAN American a "proper s… Continue

Chesterboy,
I left several messages so that we can meet at the court on Sunday, Please call so that I can confirm the time. You voiced your opinion about alot of things and I have asked for you to meet me half way. I would like schedule a meeting with Dr. Thorton and I also requested that you set up the meeting since you felt that my comments were viewed as angry.

Desire, thank you, however, my work is not about me it is about the young people in the community and if one life is saved then my work is not in vain.
Please do not forget about the block party this Friday, June 19th it is a celebration of Life for Enemim Smith. Stay true to yourself and know that the work continues.

That's what's up. Why can't we work with people in City Hall. I have mad respect for you and Nicole both of you have mad skills. Like I said, I know the work that has been done for so many. There are alot of people in the community that have respect for the Councilwoman too. She's like the go to person at City Hall. We can agree to disagree. It should not be a matter of who does how much. It's more than enough work in Chester to go around. One thing for certain and two things for sure. Government controls our environment. We can be smart and agree to work with them and make sure our needs are being met or we can continue to argue and fight with one another. There is only (1) God and he forgives and can bless us all. The tongue is deadly, powerful and hurtful. I hope to see yall done at the courts on Sunday. I just felt like I wanted to defend a person that has helped me and others in the community. Not with concerts, but jobs, education, mentorship and much more. I hope everyone can come together for the sake of the community

Chesterboy,

we can have a difference of opinions and I will still sit at the table and reason with you are you up for a conversation for the sake of the children? I am up for it so that we can put this behind us and still agree to disagree if need be. We both have passion for what we believe in and I think you to are doing a great job. Peace

Dear Desire,

I feel that it is unfortunate that people can not have a difference of opinion and it not be taking personal, First of all I would like to bring to your attention that I made a comment on the Daily times web site. I would like to again state my opinion for the record. I once again feel that it was great that any child that was at the party at City hall did not get hurt and was at a positive venue. However, I do not think that it was the responsibility of the city to be party planners, instead m I feel that the overtime could have been spent securing the entire city, graduation night and nights forthcoming. In addition, DR. Thorton should have been notified not anyone else and he should be afforded to state his side of the story. When often state that children should be able to have a disagreement and still work together and the adults are not able to do the same. I have advocated for over 18 years and have court cases to prove it and Dr. Thorton and I can be in court one day and on the telepehone the next day assisiting each other to save lives. Therefore, I people have opinions and if they can get over themselves and stop taking things so personal and respect the fact that we can disagree and work together then we will show the children better than telling them and not being able to get past our own differences. In addtion, the city was in fact aware before the video anyone that entered Chester was aware and it is all of us parents to that have to take part in the fact that we did nothing about it. Therefore, we must all share the blame and until we look at the entire picture and change some things then it will continue. Alot of people assist in more ways then one. Great work and disagreement is not always a bad thing it is how you get past it that matters.

I do apologize. I just think that you are really gaining major visibility of your site. This is such a helpful tool for residents in the city. I was aware of the incident in the Bennett Homes. I actually called their Police Department because Chester Housing Authority has its own Police Department. The person that answered the phone sounded really unconcerned, so I called the Chester Police Department to break up the mess. This is a real problem in the Bennett Homes Projects just about every night. I called Mr. Fischer several times about this place. The residents don't have heat in the winter and violence is really prevalent.

Thank you for responding. What I mean by you being wrong this time is you did a great thing by showing the video and it got a response. Now that the City reacted by doing something, you have made great strides. Now, you want to deal with numbers of kids that were and were not there. They had a choice to show up or not. The class advisor Ms. Boggle was suppose to inform Dr. Thornton of the event not the city. I have work with th classes for years on this event and that's always the process. Dr. Thornton told the teachers, security, and parents that he did not think it was a good idea and tried to stop the event. Yet, he offered not alternative to the event. In fact, his exact words were they don't belong to me after they graduate tonight. The reason graduates did not attend the event is that 300 were in the Bennett Homes in a hoe down, why are you not dealing with Chester Housing Authority about allowing this event. I had to do it but the Chester Police shut down the party at the Palidium which I believe saved kids lives because someone is always getting shot and killed down there. You did a good thing with the video, but don't make your argument about how many kids were or were not there because this just makes you wrong. Again, your too smart to do that. You made the City take a look at a problem and respond. Progress does not happen over night. Don't lose your credibility by being petty like so many others. Again, there is more to the situation with Dr. Thornton trust me. Hell, I am happy that someone did something. If it was only 10 kids, then that's 10 that were saved from alcohol, drugs, unprotected sex and other dangers. I hate to do it , but I have to give the city their props on this Desire.
