I'm a graphic design guy living in NYC who does some social media stuff on the web too, including a top-rated internet radio show. I write original songs and parodies, do a blog on minutia in the news, green graffiti and generally cause trouble (if you're a major corporation or news outlet).

I understand but feel it's not possible to have it both ways. You could make a good argument that CNN (and I will on my blog) used your race to incite by this word (uppity).

- My wife is North American Native from a tribe in what is now Canada. We don't see or encounter much discrimination (or "racism") but people are curious....not much more.
I do realize there is a fairly large contingent of people who are seriously charged by some central race issue (white vs. black etc) but it eludes me as to what factions or political bases exist on this matter. Clearly it exists, or the major media outlets would not instantly seize on any opportunity to catch a play or turn a nothingburger incident into a major racial play.
Where is the root of all this? North vs. South? It surely isn't here in the NorthWest.
Perhaps it all goes further back than I would think.....

- That is an interesting controversy......apparently different people use the term to mean and project different things depending on the circumstances and who is involved. The danger there is that "interpretation" comes into play and that will always yield the more sensational of possibilities.
Pretty much the same as the adrenalin effect on Sgt. Crowley and Professor Gates when "racist" claims entered the picture.

- In canvasing my ancient recollections, I think I heard this used by the parents of many of my childhood friends.........."Don't get uppity with me!" type of stuff. Once I got to adulthood, I think about the only times I have heard this is in movies that play on racism or a time travels back to a period of the 50's? (60's?)
I'm a white guy raised on the far West Coast and most of the "racist" (if that is even appropriate) generally isn't directed at black people, if color is even a factor. Hispanics, definitely at times.

- Hello igotmyreasons: I have never heard of "uppity" being used with a racial content. In fact, I can't think of a circumstance where I have heard the term used in many years, possibly since I was a child (I am 50 now).
Is it in common usage in a particular region or amongst a class of society or perhaps amongst certain cultures?
